The ICONIC Siamese Fighting Fish Event at ICONSIAM from Apr 19 – 23

“The Iconic Siamese Fighting Fish” from April 19 – 23, 2019, at M Floor of ICONSIAM

ICONSIAM, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Agriculture and Co-operatives, Office of Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion, Optimum Betta, Thai Postal Service and Conservation and Development of Traditional Betta Fish, hosts an event dedicated to betta fish titled ‘The Iconic Siamese Fighting Fish’ which is presented by Iconsiam’s managing director Supoj Chaiwatsirikul and director-general of the Department of Fisheries Adisorn Promthep. The highlights include a betta fish sculpture made by the winning Thai ice sculpting team of the 46th International Snow Sculpture Festival in Japan, exhibitions and shows displaying the history and origins of the fish, more than 500 Siamese fighting fishes on display and the announcement of the fish as a national aquatic animal. A panel discussion on the importance of the betta fish in terms of commercial and business expansion will also be held. The event is until Apr 23 at Iconsiam’s Charoennakorn Hall on the M floor.

5 Wonders at The ICONIC Siamese Fighting Fish Event

This Apr 19 – 23, ICONSIAM would like to invite all to the The ICONIC Siamese Fighting Fish event at the Charoen Nakhon Hall on M Floor ICONSIAM. The event will showcase various stories regarding the betta fish, which has just been officially registered as Thailand’s national aquatic animal recently. Across this 5-day event, countless interesting activities will be held so visitors can learn how valuable and important the “pla kad” is that has rendered it our national aquatic animal.

The Coming Together of Over 500 Betta Fish!

In the center area of The ICONIC Siamese Fighting Fish event is a highlight not to be missed. There, you will find the Betta Wall, a glass wall that will showcase many different species of betta fish, this including local species that have become the ancestors for many different other species around the world. There are also rare and beautiful betta fish that are hard to find, such as the betta fish with flag colors, golden betta fish, black light betta fish, galaxy star betta fish, etc. Within the same area, farmers also have betta fish they have harvested for sale. Another event not to be missed is free giveaways of 100 betta fish per day (20 fish are handed out per hour, giveaways held once every 2 hours). All packages will include raising instructions and also fish feed.

Betta Brilliance-The Beauty and Strength of Thailand

Earlier this year, a reason that brought much happiness and pride to Thais was the Thai ice sculpting team which won the grand prize at the 46th International Snow Sculpture Contest at Sapporo. The team had created their sculpture in the shape of betta fish, Thailand’s national aquatic animal, under the name Betta Brilliance-The Beauty and Strength of Thailand. However, most Thai people have only gotten to admire this work through photographs.On Apr 19, the sculpting team consisting of Kusol Bunkobsongserm, Amnoaysak Srisuk and Kitsana Wongtes will give the honor of recreating their work once again so Thai visitors can have the opportunity to witness the real thing. For this showcase, the team will be sculpting ice that is as wide as 1.6 meters!

Besides the ice sculpting exhibition that will be held on Apr 19, there are also other artworks on display, such as betta fish made from pure bamboo by Korakot Aromdee, an artist with expertise in creating bamboo-related works who has created various masterpieces with knotting techniques for over decades. On display is also the evening gown by Joe Surface, who has gotten inspiration from the betta fish. This dress was also seen on the stages of Miss International Queen 2019.

Workshop

After seeing masterpieces by professional Thai artists, try your hand at creating your own art at the countless workshops that ICONSIAM has prepared. On Apr 19, Korakot Aromdee will demonstrate how to weave normal bamboo into a beautiful betta fish. On Apr 20, famous paper artist Pitoon Traisuravanit will be sharing how to turn paper into a beautiful betta fish with flowing, realistic-looking movements.

On Sunday Apr 21, Visarute Angkatavanich, the photographer behind the betta fish photographs on the screens of iPhone 6S will be recommending techniques and tips of how to photograph betta fish. Don’t miss this if you love photography. On Monday Apr 22, a workshop to paint betta fish on tote bags will be held, before Apr 23 closes off with an activity to decorate betta fish aquariums.

An Intimate Talk

It’s not just fun activities for visitors to come unleash their imagination, as there will also be talks held so visitors can come and discuss various subjects in an intimate and fun manner. On the opening day (Apr 19), an interview will be held with the sculpting team who were champions of the 46th International Snow Sculpture at Sapporo. The 3 members will be sharing their fun working experiences from that competition, as well as the behind-the-scenes behind the new sculpture on display at the event.

On Saturday Apr 20, meet the ultimate fan of betta fish, Channon Kosupat, will be talking about how the betta fish is a national treasure and ingrained with the Thai way of life. On Apr 21, Visarute Angkatavanich will be sharing his experiences, as well as techniques of taking photographs of the betta fish that has made him world famous thanks to the “Pla kad” photographs on the screens of iPhone 6S.

On Apr 22, Golden Betta Farm and the Conservation and Development of Wild Betta Group will be talking about breeding local species into a new species, which will explain how the 5 local species from Thailand became the origins for other species around the world. Lastly, on Apr 23, a talk will be given on the developing the business of betta fish. All of these talks will be held on the stage at the Charoen Nakhon Hall (M Floor) free of any charge.

Pla Kad Exhibition

Many may wonder why the betta fish has been officially recognized as the national aquatic animal. You will definitely find all your answers at The ICONIC Siamese Fighting Fish event. At the betta fish exhibition zone, on display are the stories of how the betta fish has been pushed onto the national podium, where it lives, as well as its place in Thai history, commercial information, different species, etc.

At this exhibition area, on display are also various products that have been inspired by the betta fish, such as Srichand, the Thai brand of cosmetics. Taking on the color palette of betta fish as inspiration, what has been conceived is the collection Srichand x ASAVA. Also on display is the photo book of betta fish by famous betta fish photographer Visarute Angkatavanich.

The ICONIC Siamese Fighting Fish event will take place from Apr 19-23.
